The First Welcome
It's been a week since we stepped on the Mexican mainland. In between all the running around looking for a rent, precious hours were spent walking in downtown, admiring architecture, listening to live music, meeting people from all over the world and eating pistachio ice cream (seriously, it's the best I've ever tried and now I try to walk away from ice cream stands, because five a day it's way too much :)) Do you know what I love most about this town - you actually NEED a sweater in the mornings and evenings. And they even say the winter is pretty "real" with hats, gloves and scarves :) I know it's not something unique, but after three years living in Baja, you basically forget there is a real world out there :) Still a lot need to be done to get adjusted to new weather, I got a little bit sick even - I am just so used going out on a street at 6 a.m. in a t-shirt. Well, not here. Ironically all my hand knit sweaters are somewhere on the bottom of the boxes, I can't wait to finally find a place and get our life back on track. Apart from pistachio ice cream I found something even more delicious and tempting...
Guys, I found a yarn store!!!!! Again, I know it's not something special for most people, but for me it's a small dream come true. Three years in a yarnless city made me really unspoiled :) I would love to tell you more about this store, but my very old pocket camera just can't handle the indoor lightning and I really want to share with you it visually as well. As soon as I figure this out, I'll post about it!Anyway I found a hand dyed pima cotton made in Turkey in the heart of Mexico! How amazing is that!
I haven't tried it yet (I am just looking and touching it :) ), so I can't say anything about the quality of the yarn in action yet, but the softness of pima cotton is just unbelievable. I worked with this fiber only once and absolutely loved it! This is the first time I will try multicolored yarn, usually I stick to solids, but this color mixture drew me in immediately.
I got just three skeins, but they are pretty generous in yardage (approximately 270 yds). I have a back up plan if I run out of it - I have a similar shade of local cotton in my stash left from a project for my dear friend that would work to mix it up with these beauties. I am definitely not going to buy more, just because I was really embarrassed with how much yarn I actually have :) It didn't seem that bad scattered around the house, but when we started packing the car and it turned out that boxes with yarn took half the space of all the things that we have... Well, you should have seen the face of my husband :) Good thing we had some space for a dog left!
I have no idea what I am going to make with it. I almost never knit/crochet from the "fresh" yarn. These skeins need to join the stash and become familiar before meeting with the perfect idea! So, welcome!
Strange enough, but this small incident made me feel completely at home here... Still so much to know, so much to see and learn, but I think it's a good start. Now I feel welcome in San Miguel!
