Marble Sweater. Amirisu Publication
Amirisu knitting magazine has always associated for me with style, timeless knitwear designs and creative photoshoots. When I saw an email in my inbox with the invitation to be a part of Fall/Winter Issue 21, I was thrilled, humbled and honored.
I aimed to create a piece that reflects both mine and Amirisu’s aesthetics - neutral color, oversize fit, casual style and, of course, texture. When 100% baby yak yarn from Myak arrived, the idea started to take form on the needles and the paper. The yak creates a beautiful stitch definition and a great drape at the same time.
After many swatches, Marble was shaped in my head - it had to be a super oversize knit that flows along your body. The bottom of the sweater features a complex cable pattern, just one pattern repeat, so the rest of the sweater is a breeze to knit. I added a simple cable panel above it to mirror the cables in the main pattern below - the reverse stockinette stitch creates a beautiful texture contrast and adds the geometrical effect to the whole piece. The rest of the sweater body is knit in simple stockinette. The drop shoulders are put together with the three needle bind off with the seam featured on the right side of the fabric for the extra texture effect.
The hardest part of the design were the sleeves. I just couldn’t decide on the finishing - I tried everything from the classic ribbing to mirroring the cable pattern from the main body on the cuffs. Nothing felt right. I knit and re-knit it dozens of times. Then I decided to experiment with the stockinette and reverse stockinette stitch combinations and then the idea of creating a tiered folded up cuff that will fall just below the elbow came into life. And now this is my favorite feature of the piece - it think it frames the sweater in such a delicate way.
