Add One Stitch Knitting. Structure.

Add One Stitch Knitting by Alina Schneider

As Add One Stitch Knitting is already available for sale, I thought I would tell you a little bit more about the structure of the book and how you can use it.

The book is aimed at beginners. The main goal is to introduce you to the knit textures in a detailed and simple way and to show how learning just knit and purl stitches can open you the realm of diverse kinds of textured fabric. The book starts with techniques that are presented in both written and visual form – you will need them in your further projects.

The next section is The Lessons. Each lesson consists of an explanation of a stitch you are about to learn, that is to say the nature of the stitch, how it will behave in different kinds of yarn and for what projects it is more suitable. Then you will find a very detailed, step by step guide of how to knit the stitch. After you get the idea, you can make the practice piece/swatch. And as you get more confident, you can move on to the actual project to put your new skills to action!

There are 15 simple and quick to make patterns for the scarf, pillow cover, hats, leg warmers, headband, cowls, blankets, phone case, pot holders, mitts, a bag and a summer top.

You can work through the book either step-by-step, lesson by lesson, which means learning the techniques, then getting to know a new stitch, practicing it and finally making a project, using it. Or you can first find the project that appeals to you the most, something you can’t wait to make and start learning techniques just for this particular project – each pattern includes the list of techniques used with the number of a page indicated, so you can easily find them. And you can move from there – learn the technique that you will need just for this particular project that you want to make, practice the stitch used in the pattern and start the project itself!

Though the book has been written for the absolute beginners in mind, those who have been knitting for awhile can also use it for those times when you are craving for some simple, one-page pattern that you can work on while binge watching your favorite show 🙂

I really hope Add One Stitch Knitting will make you fall in love with knit textures over and over again!

Book Yarns

Add One Stitch Knitting. Yarns.

Happy Sunday, dear friends! First of all, I would like to thank you for your wonderful comments and messages and emails sent my way – I read every single one of them and I cannot express how grateful I am for all your support. Before Add One Stitch Knitting is officially released, I will tell you a little bit about the making process. As I mentioned in my previous post, this book is the result of work of many people and each of them made it possible to happen.

Today I would like to express my gratitude to yarn companies that were so kind and generous to provide me with the materials.

DROPS Yarns, Cascade Yarns, Debbie Bliss – Thank you so much for your support!

You know how much I love the process of getting to know the yarn before starting a projects with it. Though the deadlines were pretty tight, I still made a commitment to create my favorite, as I call them, yarn photo stories to share with you later.

When I got the confirmation from the editor that the publisher gave us a green light for the book, I asked two things – first, that the fibers we use are natural animal and plant fibers and second, that I would love to stay true to myself and choose neutral soft color palette. Thankfully, I got the full freedom in that and I started preparing the list of yarns and colors.

Cascade. Lana Grande. 100% wool.

Today I would like to share with you this beautiful fiber collection I was so lucky to work with! I mentioned earlier that the diversity of fibers and textures and colors is one of the most fascinating things for me in knitting and the fact that I received a box full of completely different fibers made me ecstatic!

Absolutely gorgeous silky 100% pima cotton and bulky deliciously soft 100% Peruvian wool by Cascade Yarns. This pima cotton creates a great drape and has a beautiful sheen to it. It is pretty slippery, so if you are novice it will be challenging to keep the stitches perfectly even in simple stockinette, but this problem is solved by the use of textured stitch for the summer top pattern provided in Add One Stitch Knitting. As for Peruvian wool, I published a full yarn review of Magnum yarn, so you can appreciate all its gorgeousness!!

Bulky Peruvian Wool

100% cotton by DROPS – creates great texture and the choice of colors is endless! The thread is spin very loosely, so the fabric created won’t be stiff at all.

Merino wool by Cascade Yarns and Nepal by Drops. Merino would make a great yarn for baby knits – it is extremely soft and not itchy at all. The spin of the thread gives amazing stitch definition. Nepal, wool and alpaca blend, became one of my favorite yarns to work with! It is just so pretty, soft and easy to knit with – would definitely use it for garment knitting!

Paloma by Debbie Bliss – magical yarn!!!! I have a big review about it that I published earlier and I also used the leftovers for my Simple Baby Hat free pattern.

Debbie Bliss. Paloma.

One of the most popular Debbie Bliss yarns – Cashmerino. A great budget way to add the touch of cashmere in your handknits!

Now to my favorite one. It is so so hard to choose that I liked the best – all the yarns are unique and interesting in their own way, but there is something about DROPS Andes that made me gasp – the way the thread is spin, the thickness of it, the amazing color palette, the texture it creates – everything appealed to me.

Looking back, I cannot believe that it’s been already a year since I started working on this project and though it was probably the toughest year workwise, I know it was so so worth it! Every single project and yarn is very special to me and I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did!

Just to remind you that the book giveaway is still open and Add One Stitch Knitting is available for pre-order!

Today I can finally share with you a very special project that I have been working on for a very long time. One year ago I opened my emails and… couldn’t believe my eyes – I was offered to write a book for beginners, introducing them to knitting textures. The idea of the book was to show to a novice that knitting is basically made of two simple stitches – knit and purl – and mastering these two stitches will open a realm of new combinations and textures. As soon as I read about the concept of the book, I knew I could do it – this was exactly how I started my knitting journey and the idea of basically endless possibilities created by just two simple stitches was the reason of my immediate fascination with knitting as a craft. And, after one year of work of so many wonderful people, this project has come to life!!!

I am trilled to present you Add One Stitch Knitting, a book for beginners, filled with simple, but eye catching knit textures and beautiful projects you can use to practice your skills!

I was at work when the courier brought me the first copies, I opened the package and cried… I couldn’t believe that it is finally here! It was such an emotional moment for me! I cannot express how grateful I feel for the opportunity to share something that I love with all my heart in such a beautiful way.

I knew I wanted to present the book to you in a special and meaningful to me way. So, I took my family on a morning hike, up my favorite mountain, wearing my beloved Heritage sweater that was protecting me from cool morning wind… I hope these photos filled with early morning sunshine, stunning views, majestic nature and my messy hair will be able to transmit how happy I am to be able to share this project with you here!

As you can see, there are two editions for the book – US and UK, as the knitting terminology is a little bit different in two countries.

One of my favorite details about this book is the color palette. When we started working with my editor, Charlotte Frost, I told her that I see the book in subtle, soft neutral colors. This is more “me” and this is how I “see” knitting. I am really happy that the publishers agreed and I had the chance to bring my vision to life. I was also pleased to see that my Instagram photo inspired the design of the cover – I think it makes it so much more personal!

Add One Stitch Knitting consists of 15 Lessons, each of them includes the detailed instructions how to knit a stitch and a simple and stylish project for your home or wardrobe to practice your new skills. The patterns were designed for the beginners, but even if you are an experienced knitter, I am sure you will enjoy making these projects! One of my favorite patterns from the book is Hurdle Rib stitch bed throw made in chunky Peruvian wool. It is a great project to work on during cool winter nights – the blanket is so warm and it is quiet addicting to see this texture growing out of your needles!

I will tell more about the book in a more structured way next week, this post is too emotional and is getting too big already 🙂 But before I finish I would like to copy here my Acknowledgements section that is very special to me:

Add One Stitch Knitting

To my dear Granny Eugenia and Granny Lidia. Thank you for your unconditional love.

I would like to express my gratitude to a wonderful knitting community for their constant support and encouragement. Thank you for knitting my designs, your beautiful letters and kind comments. This book would never have happened without you!

I would like to thank my editor Charlotte Frost for guiding me through the whole process, offering comments, expertise and encouragement.

Last but not least I would love to thank my husband for believing in me.
