Swatch Frenzy and New Knitting Skills

Moeke Yarns

Knitting has officially taken over my life. These past 10 days I’ve become a swatching machine! How many Moeke swatches did I knit even I don’t know – 10, 15, 50?! Every single free minute of my day I am chasing this “aha” moment, trying to catch just the right stitch combination for the image in my head.

This time I decided with Ioana that I will experiment with holding two strands of Elena to create a little bit different from Journey and The Choice look. It’s fascinating to watch how such a small change can transform the fabric, plus it knits up much faster!

You should definitely experiment with your stash and mix it up a little bit. It doesn’t even have to be the same fiber, or color or yarn weight. If you have a lace yarn in your stash that you love and can’t wait to put it in use, but scared of committing to a lace weight big project, just hold two strands together. I am still in love with my Gallery sweater which was knit with 1 strand of lace weight merino + 1 strand of lace weight alpaca/silk blend.

Now to something completely new for me… Sock knitting!!! Yep, I am going to make the first pair of socks in my life, that is decided! After reading Michelle’s, Tahnee’s, Tien’s and Andi’s blogs, I am giving up – I have to see for myself why sock knitting is so addictive!!

The timing is perfect. First of all, I’ve been freezing in the mornings and always have a pair of socks on, why not to put on the hand knit ones? Second, I need a small simple enough project to clear my head a little bit. And the last, but not least, I saw this photo on Purl Soho and fell in love – how adorable are those Pom Pom socklets?!

My latest stash enhancement from KnitCrate will be perfect for my first pair of socks – SilverSpun is a blend of cotton + nylon + spandex + silver. Cotton and nylon will be great for durability, spandex for the stretch and “memory” and silver has great therapeutic properties and blocks all the odor causing bacteria. Perfect sock yarn, in my opinion. What do you think?

I am super excited to learn something completely new for me in knitting and have a pair of adorable pom pom socks on my feet. Let’s hope I am not going to frog the whole thing in a couple of weeks 🙂

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Thank you, Emily! I was pretty indifferent to sock knitting, but seeing all the amazing sock projects on my favorite blogs made me reconsider 🙂

I am so bad about swatching. I just want to dive into a project all the time!
Sock knitting is the best. So portable. Such great gifts. So many variations. And the yarns!

You have totally got this! Knitting socks is just so so much fun and really does help beat the blues some days. Plus you get to pick from a huge selection of amazing colored yarns! I hope you have fun 🙂

I love sock knitting. I think it is knitting something 3- D. Hope you enjoy your sock journey. There is nothing like home knitted socks.

I am enjoying having taken up sock knitting! I love the advice about not being afraid to start. Too often we hold on to what we love instead of making something we would love even more all made up.

Good luck with the sock knitting! I knit a pair of socks a few years ago and had fun making them, but they didn’t feel quite right on my feet and I haven’t made any more since. But one of my knitting plans for the year is a cozy pair of socks for my grandma, so I’ll be giving socks another go!

That pompom sock pattern is super-cute, by the way!

A warning: If you get bitten by the sock-bug, there is no turning back….
But, as I have told numerous times, sock knitting was life changing for me! Wearing, knitting, gifting hand knitted socks is a delight.
Just look out for second sock syndrome!

ooh, such a good idea to knit the socks in the new yarn! they are going to be so cute. And swatching is so worth it, even though it often feels like a loooong stage!

Oh, so much fun! That is such a good tip to mix up your yarn stash – it’s something I have never tried but should look into! And good on you for getting started on sock knitting! I love knitting socks, they are so satisfying. And so cozy to wear 🙂

I just started knitting socks last year and I have to admit I prefer wearing them over store bought ones. They are also very portable so you can knit on them when you’re out and about. However, I still prefer knitting other items more. Enjoy! I will be interested to see what you think.

Alina, I really love this color combo. I think you will really enjoy your socks. Even if the making process isn’t as enjoyable for you as knitting another item, you will no doubt love wearing the socks. There is nothing quite so cozy as a handmade pair of socks. Good luck!

I am so excited to see your sock progress! The SilverSpun looks to be a lovely yarn for a cute pair of ankle socks. I hope that you enjoy the process of knitting on your first pair of socks. 🙂
