Cable Sweater Pattern

After months of work J O U R N E Y sweater is finally published today! Before I get to the description of the pattern I would love to thank people who made this project possible. First of all, Ioana, the founder of Moeke Yarns, and her family that has been working so hard to bring this amazing yarn to knitters. I am so grateful to Ioana for trusting me and giving me full creative freedom with the pattern, for her constant support and encouragement all these months. My test knitters, Josh and Saskia, helped tremendously in creating the final version of the pattern. I would never be able to do that on my own! And, of course, to YOU, my friends, for your support and love! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!!!

I would also love to thank my husband who believes in me so much more than I believe in myself and every time I say "I can't" is always there to support me. He surprised me with an amazing poem he wrote for J O U R N E Y  that  I really want to share with you here, I think it will resonate with so many people!

Journey

My path has taken me so far,To places I've seen not before,The journey, following my star,This journey started in a blur.

My search was long, not easy too,What I was looking for - knew notAnd yet, I felt the need to follow through,I felt the lesson I was being taught.

Yes, I have been so lost at times,At others I have felt alone,I did condemn myself of crimesWhen I was facing the unknown.

Yet I pursued, I persevered,I felt this journey had to be,I've followed through, my view I've cleared,It took much time to finally see:

This journey helped me to becomeWho I am now so proud to be,There was a time for it to come,For it to make me finally free.

It built this person I am now,It strengthened up my faith in me,I've learned the lesson: I know howThe journey destined me to see.

Poem by Anatoliy Schneider.

Cable Sweater Pattern

When Ioana contacted me and offered to create a small collection of patterns with Moeke, I got excited and scared at the same time. At that time I was in not a very creative stage in my life and I guess this collaboration was like a breath of fresh air that I needed to recharge and start over. The moment I took Elena skein in my arms, I fell in love. This yarn is so alive! And I immediate knew that it would be great for texture and cables that I love so much in knitwear.

The design of a sweater started to take shape in my head - it was a classic pullover, fitting at the shoulders and sleeves and slightly lose in the main body. Relaxed, modern and covered in texture. I always feel like cables are the best way to "know" and enjoy your yarn. All these stitch crossings allow you to really feel the yarn and appreciate it. And, believe me, Moeke is worth to spend time with! The yarn is rustic, sturdy and durable. It holds the shape perfectly and I know I will wear this sweater for many years to come.

Elena's natural undyed color is versatile and showcases the cables impeccably, making stitches stand out. The texture of the thread itself creates a very interesting effect on its own; and in combination with cables the unique textile piece is born.

Before I came up with the final combination of these stitch patterns, I made dozens of swatches, matching and combining them in different ways. I wanted to make a classic Aran sweater, but with the modern touch. I can't say exactly why I combined these stitch patterns that came from completely different places, but it felt right. As soon as I put the swatches next to each other, I knew it - I found it!

I know that some knitters don't block their knits, but, believe me, with Moeke you just can't deprive your piece of knitwear of a nice bath, because after the blocking this yarn opens up incredibly beautiful! It has just enough drape that doesn't make the fabric stiff, but still holds the shape perfectly!

I see you wearing J O U R N E Y during chilly fall and winter mornings in the house; bundled up in it during your walk in the city or in the woods... I really hope that both the process of creating and wearing it will be enjoyable for you, just like it was for me.

Sweater Details

J O U R N E Y is a modified drop shoulder pullover. The sweater body is knit bottom up. You join to knit in a round after creating side splits. This little detail gives you more room in the hip area and creates nice visual affect. The stitch pattern that "fills in" the space between cables took me more time to find than the cable stitches. I was looking for something that is slightly stretchy, textured, but easy and fast to knit; and at the same time something that would look harmonious with the cable stitches. I am happy to say that this variation of the classic rib stitch is perfect!

After you are done with the body, you will join the shoulders using the three-needle bind off method and then will start knitting sleeves in the round top down, creating the cable, mirroring the side cables on the main body. The sleeves are knit extra long to create a folded cuff. You can easily modify the length of a sleeve and adjust the length of a cuff by trying the garment on.

The neckline is classic and is knit holding two strands of yarn for a more sturdy and durable effect. You are also free to experiment and make the neckband more narrow for a more open neckline look.

The sample is knit with 4"-5" of ease, but you can easily play around with it.

For a more tailored look choose the size with 2" of ease; for a more relaxed look - 6-10" of ease.
