FO – Gesture Sweater

Detailed post with the list of techniques used can be found here – Gesture Sweater. FO Details.

We Are Knitters. Gesture Sweater.

Happy Wednesday! This weekend we went for a long walk in one of my favorite neighborhoods and took way too many photos of the recently finished alpaca sweater. What can I say… This is one of the softest sweaters I have ever had. Thunderstorm season is fully on, mornings are foggy and rainy, so the first thing I do in the early dawn hours is to put the sweater on and drink a big cup of tea… So, so cozy!

We Are Knitters. Gesture Sweater.

I was a little bit worried about how it would react to blocking, but the sweater hold its shape and didn’t grew much, so the length is just perfect. Side seams also help to hold shape. Mattress stitch was so easy to work with this yarn – it is very smooth and silky and creates perfectly even practically invisible seam.

I think I know what I’ll wear for my 40-hour trip to my family. I always get cold on the planes and their acrylic/polyester blankets don’t help at all πŸ™‚ Gesture sweater is like a cocoon to wrap yourself in!

We Are Knitters. Gesture Sweater.

Did I mention how much I love those sleeves?! I added a couple of extra cm to them and the degree of coziness jumped up πŸ™‚ I will always choose way too long sleeves over classic ones!

The central cable panel is mirrored on the sleeves and creates a very dramatic effect. It was also a great point of interest while knitting – keeps your mind engaged!

As you can see neckline is slightly wider than the original version. It was very easy to modify – just a couple of extra stitches each side of a neckline.

All I can say is, “Wow!” That sweater is just beautiful, as in an heirloom. It looks very hard, almost like an Aran sweater. I can believe that it is warm and cozy. And it fits you perfectly! It looks just beautiful on you. As my grandmother would say: Wear it in good health!

    • Alina July 13, 2016 at 6:44 pm - Reply

Thank you so much! It was very easy and relaxing to knit! But I am working with cables a lot, so maybe it’s just me πŸ™‚ Fair isle seems so much more complicated to me!

  13. CathieJ July 13, 2016 at 7:16 pm - Reply

That sweater is a beauty. I love how you enlarged the neckline. I love the look of a wide(boat) neck sweater. I think the pattern may be past my skill at the moment but you never know.

    • Alina July 14, 2016 at 6:06 pm - Reply

Thank you so much! Wide necklines suit everybody! If you knitted at least one sweater, you will be able to handle it. The shaping in the body is pretty much non-existent, except for the neckline.

Gorgeous sweater – I like to think of you cuddling up in it first thing in the morning for your first cup of tea! – and definitely a must for that long plane flight – airplane temperatures are horrible and chilly πŸ™‚ Fascinating the small things we knitters individually do differently – I don’t like sleeves too long at all, and always shorten the arm length! Lastly, thank you for the opportunity to participate in the WAK giveaway – their yarn looks so scrummy that I am almost drooling (oh dear!)

    • Alina July 16, 2016 at 6:40 pm - Reply

Thank you so much, dear friend! That’s why I love modifications so much – always fun to experiment and adapt a piece according to your preferences!

It is every bit as wonderful as I thought it would be! A masterpiece πŸ™‚

  24. sarah w. July 15, 2016 at 4:21 pm - Reply

Oh my goodness, that cable work is to die for. I love how you mirrored the central cable onto the sleeves. It’s a brilliant design element and really “makes” the sweater. Also, I couldn’t agree with you more about the sleeve length. Something about longer sleeves just makes me feel so cozy. Well done.

    • Alina July 16, 2016 at 6:42 pm - Reply

Thank you so much, Sarah! I can’t take any credit for a design – it’s We Are Knitters’ design team responsible for this stunning piece πŸ™‚

  25. Violet July 15, 2016 at 4:23 pm - Reply

Your sweater is gorgeous! I love the beautiful cable throughout and also the colour of the yarn. It looks like it would be great for our too long winters up here in the North! You have beautiful patterns.

    • Alina July 16, 2016 at 6:43 pm - Reply

Thank you so much, Violet! The sweater is definitely perfect for any cold weather! But I also love wearing it in mild temperatures – alpaca isn’t itchy at all and feels great against bare skin!

  26. Julie July 17, 2016 at 6:20 pm - Reply

oh wow, that sweater is sooo stunning!! I love the cables, like a double antler cable! It looks so wonderful on you!

  27. Noreen July 18, 2016 at 1:01 am - Reply

I adore those cables, I haven’t been brave enough to attempt cables yet

    • Alina July 18, 2016 at 7:57 am - Reply

Thank you, Noreen! Cables are so much easier to knit than they seem to! You should give it a try – you will be addicted in to time πŸ™‚
